Friends and family of author and historian Owen Vaughan, who recently died after a long battle with cancer, will say their final goodbyes today.

History researcher and writer Owen Vaughan, 67, of South Meadows, Pembroke has written several works on the local area including The Headstones and Memorials of Park St, launched at the Royal Dockyard Chapel shortly before Christmas.

At the January meeting of Pembroke Dock Town Council, Mayor Pam George informed fellow councillors of Mr Vaughan’s death. Councillors paid tribute to the respected historian.

“He did enjoy the launch, we couldn’t stop him talking,” said Cllr George, adding: “Unfortunately we finish on a sad note.”

John Evans, of the Sunderland Trust, who had worked with Mr Vaughan, said: “I’m just in awe of his research, the depth and the amount of time and effort is just staggering.

“As one who has been involved in research for many years I was in awe of how he went about his research, the complexities are mind-boggling; to many that’s a mountain too big to climb, he climbed that mountain.

“We were honoured to have known and worked with him, as a friend and fellow researcher, we shall miss him.”

Photographer and fellow Sunderland Trust member Martin Cavaney said: “Owen was a quiet, shy man who never boasted of his achievements, he bore his illness with quiet bravery and determination and will be sadly missed by friends and family alike.”

Mr Vaughan’s funeral is due to take place today, Thursday, January 22, at 2pm, at St Mary’s Church, Pembroke.
