A PEMBROKESHIRE television presenter is getting ready to champion the rights of Welsh consumers as the latest series of BBC One Wales’ X-Ray takes to the screens.

Rachel Treadaway-Williams of Saundersfoot, who has been with the popular programme since 2009, is looking forward to investigating scams and dodgy deals as the popular show begins its 14th run.

In the first programme, next Monday (February 2nd), Rachel will be telling the story of a Welsh conwoman who tricked her customers out of more than £150,000.

She and fellow presenters, husband and wife Rhodri and Lucy Owen, will be working throughout the series to offer money-saving advice as well as tips to help the public being taken in by unscrupulous individuals and companies.

“Whenever there is a government scheme, such as energy-saving measures, there will be people popping up trying to take advantage,” said Rachel, aged 38. “So many problems that we have aired on X-Ray begin with a cold call.

“The advice I would give to anyone is - if you are being cold-called, then be immediately suspicious. Stay calm, be assertive and make sure they know you are in control. The person on the other end of the phone wants something from you.

“It makes me very angry that some people will take advantage of those have not got the energy or the ability to deal with situations like this, and that’s what drives me and all my colleagues on X-Ray.

“We have an absolutely fantastic team of researchers and I can’t speak highly enough of our team for their bravery and tenacity.”

Brought up in Redberth, Rachel is a former pupil of Sageston CP School and Tenby’s Greenhill School, and went on to study science at Queens College, Cambridge.

She entered the world of broadcasting as a runner on Tomorrow’s World, going on to become a researcher on Roy Noble’s BBC Radio Wales show and then moving into a front-of-camera role as a sport presenter .

As well as working on X-Ray three days a week, she also co-presents Radio Wales’ drive time show, Good Evening Wales, on a Friday.

It’s a long commute between Rachel’s home in Saundersfoot, where she lives with her husband Steve and their two young sons, but she wouldn’t have it any other way.

“We want to give the children the chance of being brought up in Pembrokeshire, as we were, and when I am not working, there is a lot of time spent on the beach and enjoying life beside the seaside,” she said.

*X-Ray returns to BBC One Wales at 7.30pm on Monday February 2.
