A review has been recommended following a call for Pembrokeshire County Council to offload Haverfordwest Airport.

Councillor Bob Kilmister’s Notice of Motion, which calls for the authority to either sell or cease operating the facility, is due to be discussed by Cabinet today, Monday, April 20.

The leader of the council, Cllr Jamie Adams, recently told full council that an estimated cost to implement a GPS based approach, together with infrastructure and operational upgrading at Haverfordwest Airport was in the region of £2.1 million.

Any further investment, Cllr Kilmister said, would make “no economic sense at all” and would be “an act of complete stupidity.”

He added if there is a need for a larger runway and better facilities then the obvious choice is to use Brawdy and work with operators which could deliver such a project.

“Pembrokeshire cannot justify two airports,” he said, “the longer runway at Brawdy makes much more sense than wasting further money at Haverfordwest.

Cllr Kilmister stressed his notice does not mention the closure of Haverfordwest Airport, only that the council should stop being its operator as soon as possible. His said there remains a need for there to be a helicopter pad at the site.

A report from the Director of Development acknowledges that Haverfordwest Airport is running at a deficit due to a number of factors, including lower usage for leisure and commercial flights as a result of the economic climate; limitations to commercial expansion resulting for the need for navigational upgrades; and the lack of an occupier for Hangar 5.

The council has been offered financial support from the Welsh Government for expansion and upgrades, and NHS Wales has also identified the airport as part of its new "flying doctor" service.

The director added that in order to consider the future operations a “considerable amount of work is required to understand what options may realistically exist” and the associated costs, benefits and constraints.

It is accepted that The review will take some months, and it is recommended that a report be presented to Cabinet by December 2015.
