Local arts organisation Span Arts has got plenty to smile about this week with the launch of its new creative community project.

The Narberth-based charity has been awarded £200,000 by the Big Lottery Fund for the Cheerful Project, which will use creativity and the arts as a way of helping rural communities thrive.

The project will be happening in three main locations - Narberth, Maenclochog and Clarbeston Road - and is aimed at connecting people of all ages who live in rural areas.

The project’s first six months will see the team - project manager Rowan Matthiessen, Sophie Pierce and Anna Sadler- visiting communities, recruiting volunteer teams and discovering what local residents want to happen.

They will then work with local people to put on an inspiring programme of workshops and events.

Said Rowan:“I am extremely excited about getting to know local people and finding out how we can work together to create new and exciting opportunities in rural Pembrokeshire.

“If you are a budding artist a local history enthusiast, a community gardener or simply someone who wants to get involved and meet new people in your area, we want to hear from you."

There will be the chance for people to have their say about the project, and Span Arts in general, at the Family Arts coffee morning on Monday June 15, from 11am-noon and the Cheerful Project launch and agm on Wednesday June 24, from 6pm-9pm, both in the Span Arts building on Town Moor, Narberth.

Anyone who would like to get involved in the project can contact cheerful@span-arts.org.uk or 01834 869323.
