A NEW information and support centre has opened in Withybush Hospital for people affected by cancer.

The service was officially launched on Tuesday (May 26) by Hywel Dda University Health Board chairman Bernardine Rees and Macmillan Wales General Manager Susan Morris.

The cancer charity has worked closely with the health board to develop the centre, which is based just inside the main entrance of the hospital. It offers information on a variety of cancer types and treatments, as well as financial, practical, physical and emotional support to cancer patients, their families and carers.

Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Co-ordinator Anthony Lorton said: “Feedback from visitors has been very positive. Several people have called in just to say thanks and say how much it has helped them. I often hear people say how important it is simply to be listened to and wish they had come sooner. In my experience the ability to support the public, as well as staff, is vital.

“Having a designated office, time to listen and information available to point people to the appropriate service is proving to be invaluable. We’re recruiting volunteers to support the service to make sure that while I’m in appointments, there will always be someone here to make sure no one faces cancer alone.”

Mrs Rees said: “We are extremely proud to mark the opening of this information centre in Withybush Hospital which will provide local people with additional support when they need it most. We are delighted to see the benefits of working in partnership with Macmillan come to fruition through this wonderful project.”

Mrs Morris added: “As treatments improve, more and more people are living with cancer in their daily lives. This means they need more than medical help, they also need practical, emotional and financial support which the Macmillan Information and Support Centre can provide. The service will make sure that anyone affected by cancer can access the right information and support.”
