A TEAM of Fishguard footballers has come out top of the league for healthy living after resisting the urge for a post-match pint for the whole of January.

The 2015 Dry January campaign from Alcohol Concern was the biggest so far, and the charity is now celebrating the champions of that campaign, with Fishguard Sports AFC being announced as the winner of the Health and Fitness award.

Steve Lewis, captain for Fishguard Sports AFC, said: “It was a fantastic effort from players, committee members and coaches to go through the whole of January without drinking alcohol. The hardest part was breaking the habit of having ‘one or two’ pints after the game. The campaign certainly sparked some very interesting conversations about each other’s drinking habits. All players, committee members and coaches commented on how they felt fresher and healthier which benefited them playing sport, in work and in their day to day life. I’m hoping to persuade a few more people to sign up to the 2016 Dry January campaign.”

Emily Robinson, Director of Campaigns at Alcohol Concern, added: “We’re incredibly proud of Fishguard Sports and all our participants and fundraisers and want to recognise and celebrate those who took the biggest Dry January campaign yet to a new level.

“The aim of Dry January is to help people to think about their drinking, and to get support in breaking bad habits. With over 50,000 people taking part, it’s great to see how people took this further and supported their friends and communities.

“Preparations are now well underway to make the 2016 Dry January campaign even bigger and better.”
