SPECIAL toy sets will be helping prepare children for hospital treatment through play.

The Lego MRI scanner models, purchased by Hywel Dda Health Charities, are designed to prepare children and young people for their MRI scan by demonstrating the process through play.

There are different types of play including pre and post procedural play to support and raise awareness of the special needs of children and young people in clinical settings.

Sandra Jones, Play Service Manager for Hywel Dda University Health Board, said: “Having an MRI scan is a very noisy and intimidating experience for children.

"With the use of distraction and informative techniques such as a play tunnel, a preparation book, playing audio of the MRI noise and the new Lego MRI model, it is possible to prepare children as young as three years old.

“Using play, we work with children and young people by preparing and supporting them and their families throughout the process.

“We have an excellent success rate and this is due to the fact that we spend time with our patients, reassuring and providing age appropriate information at all times.

“Children who are prepared for their MRI in this way tend not have to have sedation or general anaesthetic, which is a huge benefit to their overall wellbeing and recovery.

“We’re very grateful to our patients, their families and our local communities for their donations as without their help we would not have been able to purchase such a vital piece of preparation equipment.”

The models are being used in Withybush, Bronglais and Glangwili Hospitals.
