YSGOL Bro Gwaun’s £10.9 million pound extension plans have been lodged with Pembrokeshire County Council.

The application sees the school’s existing hall and gymnasium retained along with the design technology block, which is only about 10 years-old.

The rest of the building will be demolished and replaced by a brand new three storey teaching block. This will include the creation of a Learning Resource Centre, new community learning facilities as well as a satellite unit of the Haverfordwest-based Portfield Special School.

The new development aims to provide a 21st century learning environment in Fishguard for 11 to 16 year-olds. The investment would be made as part of the 21st century schools programme, which is supported by the Welsh Government.

The application is likely to be considered by the council’s Planning and Rights of Way Committee next month, and if approved work will start on site in the summer with the new extension being ready by September, 2017.

A separate planning application is due to be submitted for demolition works later on in the year.

Fishguard County Councillor Pat Davies said: "The governing body and the wider community have been consulted throughout this process and it is planned that the community as a whole will benefit from this development."

Ysgol Bro Gwaun headteacher Nerys Nicholas said: “It is very exciting. We have worked closely with Pembrokeshire County Council and the architects in Cardiff to come up with the plans.

“We are now looking forward to seeing it all realised from the summer onwards, with all our pupils the getting learning opportunities that they are entitled to.”
