Two hundred soldiers will clash on Goodwick Sands next year as part of the twin towns’ commemorations of the 220th anniversary of the last invasion of Britain.

Other ideas for the anniversary year include an educational soldier’s encampment, an education programme, theatre, film and music events, family research, the creation of pieces of art including the Angel of North Pembrokeshire, and the commissioning of original stories and music.

A steering group for the 2017 event has been formed and is in the process of formalisation into a company limited by guarantee. The group is keen to get in contact with everyone that is interested in being involved in the event.

The group plans to develop a program of projects to take place throughout the year, before culminating in the re-enactment of the last invasion in September 2017, which will involve between 150 and 200 soldiers and use the same Napoleonic Society as the bicentenary celebrations two decades ago.

Fishguard, Goodwick and the surrounding area has a very special place in history, with many of the stories all but forgotten or untold,” said the group’s chairman and outgoing town mayor, Richard Grosvenor.

“We intend, with the help of our communities, to seek out and actively tell these stories and ensure they are embedded in our heritage.

“The last invasion re-enactment follows the stalwart work of the team that organised the 200th anniversary event 20 years ago. If we can be half as successful as they were, this will be a fantastic event for North Pembrokeshire.”

The group is very keen for interested parties to contact them with their thoughts and ideas which could be included in the programme of events. It is also very keen to hear from any group or member of the community who is interested in joining them in this innovative plan for Fishguard and Goodwick.
