Dog owners are being warned to be aware of the potential danger to their pets of jellyfish stings.

It follows a severe allergic reaction suffered by a terrier which came into contact with a jellyfish on a Pembrokeshire beach.

Fox terrier Peppa was taken to a vet's with very itchy skin and lesions on her back after the encounter with the species in Saundersfoot on the weekend of June 11.

"The owners saw her sniffing at a dead jellyfish on the beach, and it's possible she also met one in the sea," said vet Lynn Davies of Vets4Pets in Pets at Home, Carmarthen, who treated the little dog.

"We saw a picture of the jellyfish and it didn't look like the sort which causes bad stings, but Peppa has obviously suffered a nasty reaction and her injuries almost look like a caustic burn."

Peppa, who was visiting the area from Tonypandy with her owners, was given pain relief and antibiotics and dressed in a body stocking to keep her wounds clean and moist.

She has now made a return visit to the vet and is making good progress.

Added Lynn; "It's always worth dog owners being aware that jellyfish stings can cause allergic reactions in some animals, and also that just because a jellyfish is dead, it still has the capability to sting."
