BOTH Pembrokeshire MPs voted to replace the UK’s nuclear weapon carrying submarines on Monday evening.

Simon Hart and Stephen Crabb were among the overwhelming majority to vote to replace the Trident missile carrying submarines in a project likely to cost more than £31bn.

A total of 472 MPs voted to replace Trident with only 117 against.

Preseli Pembrokeshire MP Mr Crabb said: “Although it is a hugely expensive renewal project, I believe that to abandon our nuclear capability at this point would not serve either the UK national interest or world peace.

“I believe it is the first duty of government to defend the nation. Trident is one of the cornerstones of our national defence, along with our conventional forces, counter-terrorism capabilities and the intelligence services.”

Among those who voted against was Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn who also said he would not push the nuclear button if he was ever Prime Minister.

His comments were met with disdain from many Labour MPs sat behind him.

New Prime Minister, Theresa May, said she would be prepared to use nuclear weapons, adding the whole point of a nuclear deterrent is that you would be prepared to strike if necessary.

Mr Hart said: “I am absolutely certain that the safety of the nation is enhanced by replacing the Trident system. A deterrent system is exactly that and I reject claims that it doesn’t work – in fact it works every hour of every day.

"Nor is it our only defence system. We will continue to have top level conventional defences as well as a greatly expanding counter terrorism capability and cyber security operation.”
