An application to site a paintballing business at part of Withybush Showground looks set for refusal, due to the risk of stray paintballs hitting aircraft using the nearby airport.

CQB Adventures, Pembrokeshire, has applied for a change of use of the old driving range in order to develop a paintballing area and an infra-red combat area.

A report to the council's planning and rights of way committee by the director of development says that the proposal would provide a new leisure facility and would contribute to the diversity of visitor attractions, supporting tourism in the county.

However the site is within the Haverfordwest Airport safeguarding area and the airport safeguarding officer has objected to the application saying: "The proposal would constitute an unacceptable hazard to aircraft landing, taking off and circulating the airfield.

"This is as a result of "ballistic objects infringing the Obstacle Limitation Surfaces for Haverfordwest Airport and potential strike to aircraft which could cause a distraction.

"As such, the proposal would result in unacceptable harm to health and safety."

As a result of this objection the director has recommended that the council's planning committee, which meets next Tuesday, refuse the application due to the impact on health and safety.

He adds that here are "no conditions which could be imposed" to mitigate the danger to aircraft.
