A Moylegrove teenager has sailed into the Royal Yachting Association's UK laser Radial youth squad, one of only six to be selected in the whole of the UK.

Tom Renny, 16, started sailing as a youngster at the Teifi Boating Club. He has now been offered a place in the squad, which is designed to enable the best British sailors, with the potential for world class performance, to develop their racing skills so they can succeed on the international stage.

To gain his place the Ysgol y Preseli pupil had to compete at the Laser Radial Youth World Championships in Dun Laoghaire last August, as well as in UK Laser Qualifiers in South Shields, Hayling Island and Pwlhelli in the Autumn.

His sailing calendar last season also included competing at the Europa Cup in Warnemunde, Germany as part of a small team of youth sailors selected by the RYA to represent the UK.

As a member of the youth squad Tom will have to attend regular training sessions at the National Sailing Academy in Weymouth, and to compete at UK events in Weymouth, Stokes Bay, Hayling Island in the next few months. He will also be competing in international competitions in Holland and Poland during the summer.

Looking to the future, Tom hopes to be selected as part of the GBR team for the ISAF Youth World Championships in 2018, and to progress from youth sailing to selection as part of the British sailing team.

Youngsters as young as eight sail at Teifi Boating Club on weekends throughout the year. For more information e-mail Ian at carswell.ian@gmail.com or take a look at the Teifi Boating Club Facebook page. All kit can be borrowed.
