TWO Pembrokeshire firefighters who saved two youngsters from drowning in Tenby last summer are in the running for a Welsh bravery award, it has just been announced.

Tenby retained firemen Billy Connor and Gary Slack rescued the brother and sister who were struggling against a strong current off the town's Castle Beach in August.

The duo are now amongst three finalists in the bravery category of the 2017 St David Awards, which acknowledge the extraordinary achievements, great deeds and contributions of people in the country.

The names of the awards finalists were announced today (Thursday) by First Minister Carwyn Jones.

He said: "The St David Awards, now in their fourth year, are all about celebrating people who have gone the extra mile to make a difference to someone else's life, overcome adversity or achieved something truly inspirational.

"Once again, the St David Awards finalists are an exceptional group of people. Every single one is a credit to Wales - it is going to be tough to choose the winners.

"I look forward to celebrating their outstanding achievements at the awards ceremony on March 23."

The Tenby firefighters' brave and swift actions have already been praised by the RNLI, who said that they undoubtedly saved the lives of the siblings, aged 13 and 14.

Billy and Gary have also been recognised by the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service at their recent Celebrating Success awards.
