A POWERFUL bilingual play aimed at dispelling the myths of dementia has earned a Milford Haven director a Wales Theatre Awards 2017 nomination.

The Torch Theatre’s artistic director Peter Doran, has been nominated in the Best Director category for Belonging/Perthyn, in association with Chapter Arts.

Based on Re-Live's in-depth interviews with people living with dementia, family members and professional carers, the play shines a light on how a dementia-friendly Wales can be created just by being yourself, being in the moment… belonging.

Written by Karin Diamond and directed by Peter Doran (Grav, Oh Hello!, Who's Afraid of Rachel Roberts?), Belonging is entirely accessible for Welsh and non-Welsh speakers alike.

Mr Doran said: “I was really grateful to be given the opportunity to work on such a worthwhile project.

"It's not often you go into rehearsal feeling that a project could actually change people's lives, but with this production we really felt that and to a point we succeeded.

"So many people who are caring for loved ones with dementia, said to us that the production had shown them an alternative way of coping, one that they were happy to adopt.”

He added: “It's flattering to be nominated as best director but the success of this production is down to many years of work by Karin and Alison at ReLive.

"I may well have arranged the icing but they baked the cake.”

Organised by arts journalists in Wales to celebrate excellence in theatre, opera and dance, the awards will be hosted by the Taliesin Arts Centre in Swansea on Saturday, February 25.
