A meeting in Fishguard's Royal Oak tonight will help launch an exciting programme of events to celebrate the 225th anniversary of the Last Invasion of Britain in 2022.

Initially celebrations were planned for this year, which would have marked the 220th anniversary.

These included a re-enactment involving between 150 to 200 soldiers and an education programme.

Richard Grosvenor, former mayor and member of the last invasion anniversary steering group said that in the end it hadn't been possible to realise the plans for this year.

"For a whole variety of reasons it became impossible to get it together this year," he said.

"Unfortunately these things take a lot longer than you ever imagine. We didn't have enough time to raise the funds.

"The decision was taken that rather than do a poor job this year we would do a good job in four years' time.

"A lot of people have come on board which is great. Hopefully we can get some good people working on it for a few years and create something memorable."

Marc Mordey, who is helping co-ordinate the meeting urged as many interested groups and individuals as possible to attend.

He said the sub group hoped the celebrations would build upon the legacy of the 1997 and encourage a similar spirit and level of community participation and that it would "celebrate the rich history and culture of Fishguard and Goodwick, and also to encourage more people to visit, shop, stay in the twin towns".

He hopes that tonight's meeting will focus on initial ideas for events, recruit willing members to the sub group, secure commitment from community groups to get involved and recruit a project manager

The launch will be held at 7pm this evening, Wednesday February 22, the anniversary of the last invasion, at the Royal Oak. If you want to attend, for catering reasons, please contact mmordey@alcoholconcern.org.uk.
