A LOCAL historian is rediscovering Pembrokeshire’s parishes one step at a time as he sets off to visit all 144 of them on foot in just a year.

Glen Johnson, from St Dogmaels, is well-known as a leading authority on Cardigan Castle. He is known as the History Man and has done extensive research into the social history of north Pembrokeshire.

“One day I was doing some local history research on some north Pembrokeshire parishes, when an idea struck me,” he said. “I found out there were just short of 150 parishes in medieval Pembrokeshire, and as an historian and a non-driver, trying to visit all of them in the space of a year would be interesting, original and challenging.”

On Wednesday, January 4, he set off on his Pembrokeshire Challenge covering the first thee parishes of St. Dogmaels, Monington and Moylegrove.

Since then he has covered a further 55 parishes and walked more than 148 miles. He is posting photos of all parishes visited on his Facebook page; Glen K. Johnson - The History Man.

Glen hopes to raise £500 for Cardigan’s MS Oxygen Therapy Centre. The registered charity costs £35,000 a year to run and relies solely on local support, fundraising and donations.

“My young sister-in-law was diagnosed with MS some time ago,” he said. “My mother-in-law has been working as a volunteer at the centre, so it is something close to my heart.”
