DRAB buildings in Haverfordwest town centre could be transformed into vibrant street scenes thanks an idea put forward by a local filmmaker.

Richard Lynch, who is a director of photography, came up with the idea when he saw the walls of a small French town brought to life with a lick of paint.

These optical illusion murals were painted by French artist Patrick Commecy, who aims to capture the culture of each location, often using prominent characters from the town’s history.

This is something that Richard, 43, wants to bring to Haverfordwest to draw people to the town centre.

“I film all over the world and have noticed the murals in quite a few places,” said Richard, 43.

“I’ve always thought it’s such a great idea, because what can be a drab end to a building becomes a huge art piece.”

Richard has put forward the idea to arts project The Lab, and has appealed for the community to get involved and artists to help design the murals.

“The ones in France would take on scenes of the local community,” he said. “If you had one in Haverfordwest you could have part of the River Cleddau, characters from Haverfordwest, something to do with the National Park or animals that we’ve got in Pembrokeshire.

“Now I’m home I want to take a stroll round Haverfordwest and find the locations first take photos and speak to a couple of artists I know and see what they come up with.”

It is hoped the colourful facades would complement current town regeneration projects on the table for Haverfordwest.

“If you did four or five and they were good, people would stop and take a photo and they would come into town to see it which would help businesses and increase footfall,” said Richard.
