A Pembroke man who twice overtook the same ambulance after taking his grandmother’s car has received a suspended prison sentence.

Shane William Goodridge, aged 23, crashed into several parked cars before being arrested.

Goodridge, of The Green, admitted dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle taking, failing to stop after an accident, driving without insurance or a licence, and assaulting the police officer who arrested him.

Ieaun Rees, prosecuting, told Swansea crown court how Goodridge took his grandmother’s Peugeot 207 after an argument.

In Great North Road he overtook an ambulance driven by paramedic Victoria Jones, “who was responding to a call and not exactly dawdling.”

The overtaking was dangerous and Goodridge, who had never taken a driving test, went on to overtake several more cars.

Mr Rees said he pulled over and the ambulance went past him, but he caught up with it and this time “undertook” it by driving onto a pavement.

By then the police had been alerted and arrested him as he returned to the home of Lynne Holme, but not before he had punched an officer in the front and back.

It was clear, said Mr Rees, that the car had collided with not just one other vehicle but several.

David Williams, representing Goodridge, said he had spent two months in custody awaiting his sentence and asked the judge to suspend the prison term.

Mr Recorder Timothy Petts said it was more by luck than judgement that Goodridge had not caused a serious accident.

Goodridge was jailed for nine months, suspended for 18 months, and ordered to complete 15 days of a rehabilitation activity.

He was also banned from driving for 18 months and instructed to pass an extended driving test if he wanted a licence
