ST DAVIDS’ new mayor and deputy mayor were elected at the annual meeting of the city council last week.

The city’s new mayor is Cllr Bethan Price. A city councillor for two decades, this is the second time that Cllr Price has been elected mayor, the first being 11 years ago when she was mayor from 2006-2007.

The mother of six is the co-owner of St Davids business boat tour business Voyages of Discovery. She grew up in Goodwick and has lived in St Davids since 1988.

“I’m looking forward to the challenges, serving the community and not letting them down,” she said. “It’s a close knit community and we all work together.”

One of the challenges for the community in the next year will be the “decanting” of Ysgol Dewi Sant pupils to Haverfordwest, while the school undergoes major structural works.

“We have got to work with the school to make sure the children have a smooth year,” she said. “We have got to support the school and the staff, they are doing such a great job.”

Mayor Price is also looking forward to the announcement later this summer with regard to the St Davids 2021 City of Culture bid.

“If we did win it would be great,” she said. “It would be fantastic. You never know we might get it.”

Deputy mayor is multi-instrumentalist and council newcomer Cllr Mike Chant. Cllr Chant is a well-known face on the county’s live music scene and for the last four years, along with his wife, has been running the city’s Sound Café.

The father and grandfather said he is still settling in to the council and is looking forward to running a three day art and music festival in St Davids in mid-July.

Both mayor and deputy mayor say that they are listening to people’s opinions on proposals to build a 63 room Premier Inn on the city’s Glas y Fryn Road and will represent them when the plans come before the city council.
