AN innovative café, aimed at breathing new life into defunct goods, will run at Fishguard Town Hall and Library this Monday, June 19.

The Repair Café will be run by the Pembrokeshire Remakery, a community project based in Letterston.

The project, supported by Preseli Men’s Shed, aims to re-educate the community in repair and mending, reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill.

By offering workshops, training and opportunities to share skills the remakery involves the local community in repairing furniture, textiles, computers, mechanical items and basic home electrical goods.

“The aim of the first Repair Café is to offer advice and repairs on a wide range of household items that might otherwise end up being thrown away,” said organiser Steve Merrill.

The free event will run from 2pm until 6pm The Repair Café will be open to anyone hoping to save money and help protect the environment by bringing their electrical and mechanical items, textiles, garden machinery, and bikes to be mended by a team of volunteers.

There will be no charge for the repairs or advice offered, but if new components are needed, they will be charged at cost price.

All donations will be gratefully received and will go toward buying tools and creating workshops that will allow people to learn how to affect their own simple repairs.

“This is our first event in Pembrokeshire,” said Steve, “but we are planning a range of workshops and other remakery events to help redress the problem of waste.

“Currently the UK is in the top five nations in the world for creating electronic waste. 50 million tonnes of electrical items are just thrown away each year. Many of those items could have been given a whole new lease of life. It will save money and give people the pleasure of seeing a valued item being brought back to usefulness. Our motto is reuse, repair, remake”

If you have something you would like the remakery team to have a look at come along on June 19 for a cup of tea and a piece of cake and see what the team oof experienced volunteers can do for you.

Remakery is also looking for skills and tools to add to its arsenal. For more information contact: remakerypembrokeshire@gmail.com/07979470517
