WORK has begun to fell Tenby's landmark avenue of chestnut trees in South Parade.

As the Western Telegraph reported last week, the 19 trees, which have been in place for over 50 years, have been found to have a fungal infection.

The discovery followed an investigation carried out by officers from Pembrokeshire County Council, the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority and an independent arborist after one fell due to strong winds at the beginning of June.

A Pembrokeshire County Council spokesman said: "The work is expected to last the remainder of the week."
