A DEBATE about a consultation on the future of Community Health Councils (CHCs) is due to be held at the National Assembly this afternoon.

The debate, tabled by the Welsh Conservatives, is fronted by Preseli Pembrokeshire Am Paul Davies.

Mr Davies is calling on the National Assembly for Wales to note the Welsh Government’s White Paper – Services Fit for the Future – “which seeks to abolish Community Health Councils in Wales”.

He also adds that the important role CHCs have played in delivering independent public accountability be noted, as CHCs have provided a “strong voice for patients in Wales”.

Mr Davies motion adds that the political party “believes that the White Paper proposals will weaken the voice of patients and communities and reduce scrutiny of the Welsh Government and Health Boards”.

He calls on the Welsh Government to extend the consultation period on the White Paper, “following its failure to properly engage with Community Health Councils, patients and the Welsh public and work more constructively with Community Health Councils on future proposals for a new people’s voice body”.

The Plenary session is due to start at 1.30pm this afternoon (Wednesday).
