A HAVERFORDWEST Councillor is calling for people to be aware of their neighbours’ pets this autumn as Bonfire night approaches.

Residents have voiced concerns about their pets during a public meeting with Alison Tudor, councillor for Prendergast ward, who said people should let their neighbours know if they intend to set off fireworks in their back gardens.

Cllr Tudor said that Bonfire night displays were no longer confined to November 5, but could be throughout the autumn as fireworks are now available to buy over a longer period of time.

She said: “Over the years we’ve all been to organised displays, and these displays happen on November 5 or close to that date.

“But because the shops are selling fireworks more freely now and they are more widely available, the general public are now able to let them off more frequently.”

“We need to be mindful that we are a nation of animal lovers and we have all got pets.

“We need to think about our neighbours and our immediate communities and let them know if we are going to set off fireworks.”

Fenton Vets, at 21 Portfield, has also reminded the public to be aware of pets in this period.

“Whilst your pets may enjoy the warmth of an extra blanket on a winter’s night, it’s easy to forget that it can be a stressful time for our four legged friends: spooky decorations, big flashes and loud bangs and festive celebrations can be scary if you don’t know what they are,” they said via social media.

The veterinary practice sells products throughout this time of year to help keep pets calm as fireworks are let off.
