A community which raised £31,000 in a year for the first phase of its play park restoration gathered to celebrate on Saturday.

Save Our Skrinkle Park was launched by residents after the equipment in the well-used park came to the end of its life and was set to be removed by Pembrokeshire County Council.

Mums, dads and grandparents - many of whom had fond memories of the park from their younger days - got together to raise money with remarkable results.

Local people in the community pledged sums ranging from £10 to £500 and fundraising events, ranging from barbeques to a Hallowe'en disco, were held.

Manorbier Community Council provided a major boost with a donation of £10,000, which levered £11,000 from the Welsh Government; Pembrokeshire Housing Association contributed £1,000 from their local fun day and South Hook LNG donated £4,950.

Said a spokeswoman: "Through the South Hook LNG community fund that we run in partnership with PAVS, we are so pleased to have been able to support this project and the hard work of everyone involved."

Five new pieces of equipment are now in place at the park - a basket swing, main frame and slide, two 'twisters' and a 'crusader' swing - together with new safety matting. The existing monkey bars, fitness equipment, swings and zip wire were re-painted by local builder Neil Lane.

Said Save Our Skrinkle Park vice-chairman, Angela Elliott: "We are absolutely over the moon to have come so far in a year. The project has really brought the whole community together and the whole process of applying for charity status and sourcing equipment has equipped the committee with some really useful transferable skills."

Manorbier's county councillor, Phil Kidney, provided Prosecco for a celebration toast on Saturday, while goody bags and refreshments were provided by Anne Rossiter of Manorbier village shop and parents.

Manorbier School's head boy and head girl, Tom Young and Ella Mathias cut the ribbon to officially open the park.

Amongst the guests were Pembrokeshire County Council chairman, Councillor Paul Harries and local MP Simon Hart.
