POLICE are investigating after one sheep was killed and others were badly injured by a dog in Square and Compass on Wednesday, January 17.

The incident happened in the early afternoon in broad daylight and was observed by the land owner. He described the dog as a black and white collie, with a white tip to its tail, wearing a red collar.

One sheep was killed and others badly injured in the attack on Wednesday.

Another similar incident, where four sheep were killed, was reported on Wednesday, January 10, in the same area, also in daylight hours.

“Sheep worrying has both a financial and emotional impact on farmers, and although farmers will quite often accept compensation from the dog owners, where the owner is identified,” said a police spokesman.

“That doesn’t really take into account the ongoing costs to buy or breed replacements. Dog owners and those in charge of dogs have a responsibility to ensure that their animals do not worry livestock.

The spokesman said the owner of a dog that worries livestock on agricultural land was committing an offence and could be fined up to £1,000 under section 1 of The Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953.

“I would urge dog owners and especially those that live in rural areas to check their kennel security and to ensure that dogs are kept on a lead when walking in areas where livestock are kept,” he said.

“The destruction caused, which can have a heavy financial implication on the livestock owner and the dog owner, is unnecessary and can be avoided.

We also highlight is that it is not always non-farming residents whose dogs attack livestock. We have had incidents reported where neighbouring farm dogs have been to blame”.

Police are urging all farmers in this area to be vigilant and to contact them immediately if a dog matching the above description is seen in the Square and Compass area.
