A PEMBROKE Dock woman is setting herself a strict goal of only spending £5 on food in five days to raise funds to tackle poverty in one of the world’s poorest countries.

Georgia Grant, from Victoria Road, is sticking to a £5 food budget over five days to support a project that tackles poverty in Burkina Faso, where she will be volunteering for 10 weeks.

Georgia, 24, will travel out to Burkina Faso in early April, with international development organisation International Service, as part of the UK government-funded International Citizen Service (ICS) programme.

She will work in partnership with Burkinabé volunteers to help promote equality amongst some of the world’s poorest communities, championing the rights of women, people with disabilities and children and young people.

She will also be living with a local host family, to fully immerse herself in the local community and gain a better understanding of the challenges they face.

“I am going on this volunteer placement because I am extremely passionate about human rights, particularly for people who have a disability, and am keen to make a positive impact in a country where these people have especially limited rights.

“It’s estimated that 10 per cent of people in Burkina Faso have a disability, and this is a group particularly struggling for acceptance and equality. FGM, domestic violence and forced or early marriage are widespread, and a huge amount of children are forced into labour, not in education and living below the poverty line.

“Doing the £5 Food Challenge will help to raise awareness of the way so many people around the world have to live, and my time abroad will enable me to help out with projects which help some of the world’s most vulnerable people.

“Experience of life within a different culture and meeting new people will broaden my mind and give me a greater global perspective.”

Before Georgia leaves for Burkina Faso she needs to raise £800 for International Service, and has already passed the half way target.

Georgia will be taking part in the £5 Food Challenge at the beginning of March. The money she raises will help to make sure that communities in developing countries continue to benefit from the work of future volunteers.
