Dog owners who take their pets for a cooling swim in one of Pembrokeshire's inland waterways are being warned to look out for the hidden danger of broken glass.

One-year-old beagle Shiloh is recovering this week from cutting an artery in her paw as she took a paddle in the ford at Sageston.

She needed stitches under sedation for the injury, which was caused by a piece of broken glass in the water.

Her owner, Natasha Goff from Pembroke Dock, is now alerting people to keep their dogs away from the ford while the hazard remains.

Posting on Facebook, she said: "When I looked afterwards there are glass bottles and all there from people who have obviously been drinking, and just chucked the bottles into the ford where they've smashed on the rocks."

Natasha and partner James Whitehouse took Shiloh to the ford last Tuesday, as they have done many times previously, because the water is calm and there are no waves to scare dogs.

"Shiloh was just having a little walk around when we heard a yelp. When James picked her up, we could see the blood gushing out from her paw, so we really panicked," she told the Western Telegraph.

"I could see broken bottles and pieces of glass with labels on in the water, so obviously she had trodden on one of these."

"Because it's a popular spot, I put a post on Facebook to alert people, because if that happened to another dog, or somebody's child, I would never have forgiven myself."

Natasha thanked Tenby vets for their prompt care of Shiloh, who is now making a good recovery, and a positive result from her Facebook post is the suggestion by local residents that they carry out a community clean-up of the ford.
