Research has taken her as far afield as Zambia and the Honduras, but now a Pembrokeshire entomologist is making a name for herself much closer to home.
Sarah Beynon, from St Davids, is currently appearing in a mini documentary for Sky television.
The documentary advertises Sky’s new ‘nature’ package, which includes the National Geographic and Animal Planet channels.
“An e-mail was sent around the zoology department in Oxford University, I responded and next thing I knew I was being called in for casting,” said Sarah, who is currently undertaking a Phd having completed a degree in biological sciences at Oxford.
The 25-year-old was then chosen over a host of other applicants and late last month was summoned to Oxford University Museum for a day long shoot.
Sarah was filmed promoting the package while handling insects and arachnids in the shoot overseen by acclaimed director Peter Lydon and she admits she loved the experience.
“Nature documentaries are something I’m interested in going into so it was a great opportunity for me,” she added.
“I wasn’t as nervous as I thought I would be. Sky stressed I was being employed as an entomologist and not as an actress.”
Sarah’s extensive research into dung beetles has become renowned and her current Phd investigates the impact of cattle wormers on the insects.
Friends and family are also ensuring she has little chance of forgetting her recent success.
“It’s bizarre the amount of people who have been in contact to say they’ve seen me, and you can tell what programmes people have watched the night before!” she said.
The advert was first aired on terrestrial and satellite television on Friday, April 3rd and is expected to run until June.
On Thursday, April 23rd, Sarah is set to give a talk about her work at the Red Cross Centre, St Davids. For more information visit www.allaboutbeetles.co.uk.
