The Lovely Somethings – Suzi MacGregor and Lucinda John-Duarte – beat off the competition at the recent Battle of the Bands competition at Theatr Gwaun, Fishguard.
The acoustic pop duo, who write all their own songs, won a first prize of £350 and will now play at a prestigious London festival in the autumn.
“We’re really excited and really grateful to win,” said Suzi. “We didn’t think we would because the other finalists were so good.
“The judges comments were really nice and very encouraging.”
The 17-year-olds, who have just finished their AS exams at Ysgol Bro Gwaun, are long-time friends who wrote their first song together in the summer of 2007.
After a year’s hiatus they got back on track after attending a Rock School at Theatr Gwaun last summer and since then have been busy writing and performing in-between school studies.
Both are taking music A-level and hope to study music at university and eventually make a career in the business.
Competition judge Jordan Kensington, chief executive of the Invincible Music Group and founder of British Music Week (BMW), said he was very impressed by the talent on show at the competition.
He said: “Fishguard has definitely got talent and we were happy to discover the new winning act – The Lovely Somethings.”
Run by Pembrokeshire County Council, the competition aimed to showcase the county’s musical talent and was open to any unsigned band.
Also on the judging panel was Machael Laushcher, BMW’s general manger; Bill Davies, Celtic Blue Rock Festival director and Cllr Rob Lewis, cabinet member for cultural services.
They awarded second prize to punk rock band Some Guy and his Mates, from Fishguard, and third place winners were dark rock/metal band Negative Profile, from Llanelli.
A monthly band night will be held at the theatre from July 11th.
