Labrador falls to death from St Govans cliff

Coastguards are renewing advice to pet owners to keep their dogs on a lead on the coast path after a dog plunged to its death yesterday (Sunday).

The black labrador called Harvey went missing off St Govans Head at around midday. It was wearing a harness but had been let off the lead and had gone missing near sheer cliffs between St Govans and Broad Haven.

The seven-year-old dog was found dead by St Govans coastguard rescue team who scoured the area around the base of the cliff.

By the time coastguards arrived the animal's owner, from Port Talbot, had scrambled down the cliff to try and find his pet.

He had to be rescued by the coastguard crew as he had got cut off by the tide and wasn't able to make his way back up the cliff.

Coastguards are urging dog owners to keep their pets on a lead and also reminding people not to put their own lives at risk by trying to effect a cliff rescue themselves.

"If you find yourself in an emergency situation call 999," said a spokesman.

"Coastguards have the training and equipment needed for cliff rescues. Do not put yourself in danger by trying to rescue a pet yourself."
