Controversial Castle Pill land up for sale

A row over the right of way of a public footpath in Milford Haven took another twist last week when the land at the centre of the 15-year dispute was put up for sale.

The Castle Pill development site, which has planning permission for 24 luxury apartments, is on the market for £825,000.

For more than 15 years, the Castle Pill Boat Club has been campaigning for the public footpath that runs through the land to remain on the same route.

Milford Haven mayor Tony Eden and members of the town council recently met with public rights of way assistant James Nevitt and definitive maps officer Matt Cloud, from Pembrokeshire County Council (PCC), to discuss the latest plans to divert the path.

Following the meeting, the town council agreed that a diversionary route from the old Dudley Marine site, up to the existing quay steps, was acceptable but insisted the two-metre wide path must be bounded on both sides of the path by ‘permanent, continuous and protective handrails’.

The council said from that point the handrails should continue and the route should follow the quay edge, inside the chain link fence, up to the base of the cliff face and ‘thereafter a gently sloping permanent concrete ramp of two metres wide should lead down to the foreshore above the mean high water mark’.

The council also stated a condition should be made that all the work on the footpath should be completed before occupation of the development.

Last Monday night, Milford Haven town council agreed to inform PCC that the site has been put up for sale and that it trusted the county council will ensure the conditions regarding the footpath will be adhered to, regardless of ownership.
