Fishguard man loses licence for drink driving

An argument with his partner led to a man from Dinas Cross losing his driving licence last week.

Martyn John Goodchild, aged 56, admitted driving when over the drink-drive limit at Haverfordwest magistrates court on Tuesday, March 9th.

The court heard that Goodchild and his partner had been out for a meal in Newport on February 13th, intending that she would drive them home.

Goodchild had drank nearly a whole bottle of wine but on the journey home the couple had argued and parked the car on the side of the road.

Goodchild’s partner began walking home but he returned to the vehicle and hit a parked van as he made his way up Dinas mountain.

Prosecutor Ellie Morgan said that residents woken by the collision were outside their homes when they saw Goodchild coming back down the mountain, having parked his Mercedes in a lay-by near the viewing point.

He waited with them until the police arrived.

He was found to have 58 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, the legal limit being 35 millilitres.

In defence, Katy Hanson said that if he had planned to drive that night he would not have drunk any alcohol.

She said Goodchild moved the car from the main road where his partner had left it so it would be safer and that was when he was in collision with a van.

“He is extremely sorry for his actions,” said Miss Hanson.

She added that Goodchild works as an estate agent and surveyor in Cheltenham and driving was an important part of his job.

Goodchild was disqualified from driving for 12 months.

He was also fined £500.
