Illegal worker found at Haverfordwest takeaway

1:37pm Thursday 2nd September 2010

An illegal worker was found during a raid on a Haverfordwest takeaway last night by the UK Border Agency.

Acting on intelligence, officers went to Seven Spice, Magdalene Street, Merlins Bridge at about 7.40pm on Wednesday (September 1st).

After the immigration status of staff was checked, a 34-year-old Bangladeshi man was found to have stayed in the UK illegally after his visa expired.

He has been placed on immigration bail and must report regularly to a police station while arrangements are made to deport him.

Seven Spice was handed a civil penalty notice for employing an illegal worker.

If the company is unable to prove the correct pre-employment checks were carried out on the man, a fine of up to £10,000 will be imposed.

The enforcement operation was part of planned nationwide action by the UK Border Agency to tackle illegal working, sham marriages, bogus colleges and organised immigration crime.

Jane Farleigh, regional director of the UK Border Agency in Wales, said: "The UK Border Agency supports and encourages businesses to comply with the UK’s immigration laws and we are happy to work with employers to help them stay within the rules.

"Our enforcement visits are always based on information received and we appeal to the public to let us know when they have information about suspected immigration offenders."
