Great-gran highlights tax break

A great-grandmother from Pembroke has won her battle to make it easier for disabled and chronically ill people to get the tax discount they are entitled to.
Val Jones, from Hundleton, enlisted the help of Carmarthenshire West and South Pembrokeshire MP Simon Hart to campaign for more awareness of tax rules, which state that disabled and chronically ill people do not have to pay the 20% VAT on goods such as walking aids.
They have just received the backing of the Treasury, which is going to make it easier for people to get the tax discount.
Mr Hart and 14 Welsh MPs from all parties signed an open letter to the Treasury calling for the system to be made clearer.
Mr Hart said: “Mrs Jones has done a fantastic job in this campaign and I’m delighted that all her hard work has paid off.
“I am sure that making people aware of their rights will save many people across the country a significant amount of money.”
Mrs Jones took action after she discovered people were paying too much for goods in chemists because they did not know their rights and neither did the people who were serving them.
