An ancient church footpath which has lain hidden for years will soon be re-opened.

The National Trust is clearing the path at Stackpole Elidyr Church to recreate a circular route around the church.

The clearance operation has unearthed the original path and an ancient bridge too.

One of the last photographs of the path being used shows the funeral procession of the late Lord Cawdor in 1911 with Bluejackets leading the Bier to the Church.

Church warden Eric Nicholas says re-establishing the footpath will make the church more accessible.

"We want lots of people to visit our church,'' says Mr Nicholas, of East Trewent. "By getting the original path back into use it will form part of a very pleasant and interesting walk.'' The National Trust, which holds a covenant over part of the site, has removed scrub and saplings and taken away all the debris which has collected over many years. "We are very grateful to the Trust for doing this work,'' says Mr Nicholas.

Stackpole Elidyr was originally built during the Norman period but it was modernised by the Cawdors in the 1850s so its interior is largely Victorian. But the 6th century altar remains.

On May 10th the church will play host to a renowned choir from Newbury as the church holds an evening concert to raise much-needed funds. Tickets will cost £3 and it is hoped to fill the church that evening.

"This choir is very highly regarded; it will appeal to people with a wide range of musical tastes,'' says Mr Nicholas.
