Planners have called for urgent action to stop what was once a prestigious hotel from rotting away at the heart of Tenby.
The scaffolding-covered Royal Gatehouse Hotel was discussed at last week's National Park planning meeting.
Planning officers said the owner had been encouraged to maintain the building over several years but so far nothing seemed to have been done.
They pointed out that concern is growing about the condition of the former hotel, especially as it stands in a prominent part of Tenby.
A report to the committee about the seafront hotel stated: "The envelope of the building is no longer sound, and internal damage to the building is increasing at an alarming rate."
Following numerous complaints about the state of the building, which is on the corner of White Lion Streen and the Norton, national park planners have decided action is needed to make sure essential repairs are made.
Councillor Mike Williams said: "It's very sad. It's difficult for pictures to convey the extent of the damage.
"This used to be a prime hotel in Tenby."
Tim Giles added: "It's been in this state for too long, and is doing harm to the town. We have to be seen to take strong action."
John Allen-Mirehouse said: "We must take action. This is a vital part of Tenby, and something has to be done for the sake of the buildings.
"It's like an apple with a rotten core, and it's not right for Tenby."
Planners agreed to serve an urgent works/repairs notice on the Royal Gatehouse Hotel, to include Kent and Milford Houses.
