A funding appeal by police in Tenby for a community speed gun is being made to local councillors.

The reconditioned gun, costing about £800, would be used by the neighbourhood policing team in the town and surrounding districts.

The team has one on loan from Pembrokeshire County Council at the moment, but the aim is to have one on hand permanently to target the persistent problem of speeding motorists.

"Most of the speed guns in the division are used in the traffic cars, and it is very difficult to have one down here all the time," explained Tenby's Inspector Russell Smith.

"The town councils in Fishguard, St Davids, Pembroke and Pembroke Dock have all agreed to part-fund their own speed guns, so we are hoping the councils in the Tenby police division area will do the same.

"Enforcement of speed is an issue close to the public's heart, and we feel there is daily use for a speed gun -not just in Tenby but in the Saundersfoot, Kilgetty and Manorbier areas."

Tenby Town Council considered the request at its meeting last week and offered its support in principle, as long as the cost would be shared with the other communities who would benefit.
