A council chairman is renewing his call for a speed limit reduction on the road outside his home, following an accident yards from his front door.

Tony Wales is chairman of Manorbier Community Council, which has already successfully campaigned to have the speed limit on the Manorbier to Jameston stretch of the A4139 road reduced from 60mph to 50mph.

But Cllr Wales feels the road should have a 40mph limit, especially after a crash early on Thursday morning, which saw the road closed to traffic for around five hours.

He is now enlisting MP Nick Ainger in his latest drive to see the limit reduced.

"Not only would a 40mph limit encourage drivers to curb their speed, but it would also provide a buffer zone for speed reduction when they drive into Jameston village," explained Cllr Wales.

"At the moment, they hit the 30mph limit at the start of the village and they are half way through before they have slowed down to the correct speed."

The accident which happened at about 6.40am on Thursday, involved a 4x4 vehicle towing a trailer which was loaded with a van.

"The impact of the accident woke me up," said Cllr Wales, who lives at North Norton.

"I went out to find the trailer had jack-knifed off the 4x4, which had spun round in the opposite direction, and the van had tipped off the trailer and was resting on the wall.

"It's lucky this happened at a quiet time, and not when children were walking to school."

Cllr Wales says he has received frequent complaints about the speed of traffic along the stretch of road, which was governed by a 60mph limit until a previous community campaign.

A Pembrokeshire County Council spokeswoman said the authority would "examine and critically appraise any perceived traffic problems which are drawn to its attention".
