Bad parking may ‘put off shoppers’

A plea to Narberth's workers to free up parking space in the town centre and help the local economy is being made this week by the local county councillor.

Despite the town's free car park being only yards from the town centre, people who work in Narberth are parking even closer to their shops and offices, by taking advantage of the one-hour parking bays in High Street.

"Because police manpower is stretched, they seem to be able to remain there all day without getting a parking ticket," said councillor Evans.

"But that means people coming into Narberth to go to the post office or do a bit of shopping will have to park in the car park and may choose to take their trade elsewhere."

Parking problems in the town have been highlighted as one of the priorities for the Narberth Neighbourhood Policing Team this month.

But councillor Evans feels the fact that only 11 fixed penalties for parking were issued in a four-week period is sending out the message that it's safe to park improperly in the town.

"There is so much inconsiderate parking," he said.

"I had a walk around the other day, and found 11 dropped kerbs completely blocked.

"There is also frequent misuse of disabled parking bays.

"Every day, I see the same cars clogging up the one-hour parking places from 9am to 5.30pm.

"Is it not too much to ask people working in the town to use our lovely free car park, and not take up the space that potential customers for their businesses should be offered?"

Surely it would be more sensible to have delivery and disabled bays only during the week-Mon to Sat 0800-1800. Everybody else should use the FREE town moor car park, and if people are that lazy in Narberth, perhaps the local bus company could supply a FREE shuttle service from the car park!!!!!
