A PROMINENT Pembrokeshire farmer is the new head of the country’s biggest farming union.
Meurig Raymond is the new president of the National Farmers’ Union (NFU), having held the post of deputy president for the last eight years.
Mr Raymond farms 3,400 acres in north Pembrokeshire with his twin brother and their families, growing 2,200 acres of combinable crops and 300 acres of potatoes, with herds of 620 dairy cows, with 300 followers. They also rear 600 head of beef cattle and around 2,500 store lambs, fattened during winter.
The firm favourite to succeed the retiring Peter Kendall, who had held the post of president since 2006, Mr Raymond defeated Warwickshire farmer Adam Quinney in an election at the NFU’s AGM and conference in Birmingham on February 26th.
Mr Raymond says his priorities during his time as president will include CAP reform and its implementation, bovine TB eradication and improving competitiveness across farming.
