TIME is running out for sheep farmers in Wales to participate in a project that could bring valuable information on the health of their flocks.

Hybu Cig Cymru - Meat Promotion Wales has launched a project to investigate levels of anthelmintic resistance on sheep farms for roundworms and liver fluke.

Both can have a negative impact on flock animal health, performance and ultimately enterprise profitability.

The project will be conducted during the autumn and farmers chosen to take part will receive their own results plus advice on future treatment protocols. The full results of the project will be given a wider industry release next spring.

John Richards, HCC's industry information executive, said: “Anthelmintic resistance continues to be an increasing problem on sheep farms in Wales.

“Many farmers are unsure of the anthelmintic resistance status on their farm, which can be severely limiting to the performance of their enterprise.

“Knowing if the farm has a resistance issue can mean that treatment can be targeted with the assurance that any medicines administered will have the desired affect.

“This will have a positive impact on both animal health and performance while also ensuring that the farmer’s time is used effectively, thus reducing labour costs."

He is encouraging any sheep farmers who wish to be considered for the project to get in touch.
