PROSPECTIVE purchasers from as far as Anglesey, to the South Wales valleys and the Welsh Borders gathered to at a dispersal sale of the Caron pedigree Hereford herd.

A very large crowd gathered at Glanpwlldu Farm, Boncath, North Pembrokeshire, for the Clear Out Sale of Live and Dead Stock on behalf of Mr Lyn Evans, who had decided to retire from farming.

He’d established the ‘Caron’ Herd in 2012 with a nucleus of heifers from the renowned Border Herd of Messrs Quan, Wormbridge, Herefordshire and which had a wealth of breeding and established bloodlines behind them.

The careful selection of a very attractive stock bull ‘Gomer Jack Flash’ from Messrs Amery, Trapp, Llandeilo, resulted in well grown and strong bodied youngstock and which was evident in the calves at heel with their dams at the sale and purchasers, and those not so lucky in buying cattle, commented on the excellent quality forward.

The first pair, Border Pansy G32 (by Border Powerhouse) (Sept 09 cow) and her month-old bull calf, Caron Mozart made £1,800 to the Border Herd of Messrs Quan and set the level for a frenzied amount of bidding for the remaining lots.

The last of the cows and calves lots topped that section at £2,300 for Border Pansy H214 (by Border Xceptional) (Sept 10 Cow) with six-week-old heifer calf to Mr Jones, Aber, St Clears. Six lots out of the 10 couples made in excess of £2,000. The three heifers with calves at heel peaked at £2,175 for Caron Rachelia K05 (by Border Rory), an April 13 heifer with a two-week-old heifer calf at heel and selling to Mr Griffiths, Penrhiwgoch, Ferryside.

The sole in-calf cow, Border Roulette G77 (by Border Rory) and carrying her third calf at the end of July made £1,700 Mr Messrs Page, Bryngwyn, Crymych.

The three-year-old stock bull ‘Gomer Jack Flash’ (by Haven Ernest) made £2,350 to established Hereford breeders Brian and Lon Morgan, Castell Mawr, Whitland.

The young bulls peaked at £2,200 for Caron Llion (Apr 14) by the stock bull and sold to Messrs Page, Bryngwyn. Caron Lewis (Apr 14) followed at £2,050 to Mr Davies, Blaenmeini, Newport (Pembs).

Two yearling heifers topped at £1,550, both by the stock bull and April 14 born, being Caron Pansy L25 to Mr Jones, Aber, St Clears, and the other, Caron Queen L28, going to the Hean Castle Estate, Saundersfoot, which took a number of lots throughout the sale. Another notable purchaser was Mr Jones, Neuadd, Llanarth, Ceredigion.

Blackface three-year-old commercial ewes made up to £125/head and three to four-year-old improved Welsh ewes peaked at £102/head. Three-year-old Suffolk rams topped at £355. Suffolk X store lambs ranged from £48-£85/head.

Keen competition continued on the field for the well looked after range of vehicles and farm machinery.
