A 590KG 25 month old Belgian Blue Heifer affectionately known as Miss Whitland and exhibited by the Roberts Family of Parke, Henllan Amgoed took the top honour in a keenly contested cattle competition at the annual Christmas Fatstock Show and Sale at Whitland Mart.

JJ Morris reported excellent entries in both the cattle and lamb classes ensuring the judge Mr Jeff Matthews of Aberystwyth faced an unenviable task in deciding the prize tickets and it was pleasing once again to see several entries from the next generation of famers.

In the lamb section the overall championship was awarded to a pen of 44.5kg lambs presented by the Windsor Family of Fforest Farm, Whitland, and these were later sold at £110 – £2.57p per kilo to Mr Ross Beynon.

Reserve champion was awarded to the Thomas Family of Cildywyll, Llanddowror whose 42kg lambs later sold at £90 – £2.12p per kilo to Mr Geraint Bowen of Bethesda Meats.

The cattle section saw the best entry for several years with top quality cattle from seven different exhibitors presented and after much deliberation the overall championship was awarded to ‘Miss Whitland’ presented by the Roberts Family of Parke with reserve champion being awarded to a steer presented by the Windsor Family of Fforest Farm, Whitland.

Best pair of cattle was awarded to the Phillips Family of Windsor Farm, Lamphey. Prior to the sale of the champion beast and show cattle, which drew a capacity crowd to the ring, the auctioneers thanked all the exhibitors and show sponsors in their continued support in ensuring this popular traditional annual event continues to be a success.

Weighing 590kg, Miss Whitland drew spirited bidding before being finally sold to Mr Geraint Bowen of Bethesda Meats at £3 per kilo a gross total of £1,770. The reserve champion weighed 590kg and sold at £2.20 per kilo and was purchased by Messrs Jones & Sons Brooklands, Pembrey.
