In preparation for the Six Nations championship, three singers from Pembrokeshire will attempt to cross the try-line and climb the charts with the Llanelli Scarlets Choir.
Following on from the success of S4C’s Codi Canu, where choirs representing the four rugby regions battled it out to win the chance to sing at the Millennium Stadium, the four regional choirs are this year releasing digital singles.
Helen Carrington and her father William John, from Llangwm, and friend Sian Bushell, from Walton East, have been singing with the Scarlets choir for three years and want to drive their version of ‘Yma O Hyd’ up the charts.
“The choir practice at Parc-y-Scarlet and we sing at most home games. This year it is more about pride in who can get up the charts the furthest. We really enjoy it too,” said Helen.
The ruck between the four choirs kicked off last Monday when the singles were released for download, but even before the release the Scarlets were ahead in pre-orders.
Helen and her family of rugby fans hope to have reach the highest position in the official UK chart on BBC Radio 1 on Sunday, February 8th – the day the Wales rugby team play Scotland.
The Ospreys choir have released their version of ‘Cwm Rhondda’, the Blues choir sing ‘Delilah’ and the Dragons choir join the scrum with ‘Calon Lan’. The singles are available to download from all major download services, or text Scarlets to 78789. All profits in aid of The Grav Foundation.
