Plans for a new youth centre in Milford Haven which will cost more than half a million pounds, are moving forward with help from the local authority, but one councillor is hoping that funding will not end at the new build.
“The county council still needs to be pushed for sufficient revenue funding because I want the club open every night of the week, as it used to be years ago when hundreds of youths used to attend,” said Milford Haven town councillor John Cole.
“At the moment only ten or 20 attend, I want to get the numbers back to what they used to be.
“If the new club is built, will the county council provide sufficient revenue to keep it open seven nights? At the moment that funding is not in place.”
The councillor’s remarks came days after plans for a new multi-use centre for those aged seven to 25, were discussed by Milford town council and county council youth service co-ordinators.
Milford mayor John Roberts said the meeting went “very well,” adding that councillors were, “looking forward to the project coming to fruition.”
If the centre goes ahead, it will be a new build, based near the Meads Leisure Centre, and it is estimated it will cost more than half a million pounds.
It will incorporate a multi-use hall, three informal learning rooms – with one of these dedicated to IT – a social area and offices.
A PCC spokesman said the council would provide £100,000 of funding for the new centre, dependant on financial help from outside sources, including around £500,000 from the National Lottery and grant funding from the Welsh Assembly.
Chairman of the Project Milford board, Cllr Rhys Sinnett said he was very happy with the way the project was proceeding, but warned that there was still work to be done. “There is a lot of work to do in the short term, just to get that lottery bid in because I don’t know what we would do without it,” he said.
