Register before it's too late

4:04pm Wednesday 16th April 2008

Dear editor - With the local council elections on May 1st rapidly approaching, can I remind readers that April 16th is the deadline to get names on the electoral register.

Anyone who is not on the register won't be able to vote. Every election people arrive at polling stations not realising this and many think they will automatically be registered if they pay council tax.

April 16th is also the deadline to apply for a postal vote or proxy vote for people who will be away on May 1st, to ensure their voice will still be heard.

Also, anyone who has moved house this year and has not re-registered, needs to do so as their polling card will go to their old address.

Anyone aged 18 and over can register to vote if they are a British, Irish, Commonwealth or European Union citizen.

To register, contact the local electoral registration office directly, or go to www.aboutmyvote.co.uk for a registration form.
