CAKES, cards, flowers, family and a drop of fizz – what more does anyone need to celebrate a 103rd birthday?

The party was in full swing for Ella Maude Harris as she celebrated another big birthday at Apley Lodge, Pembroke Dock, last Friday (July 11).

Mrs Williams, of Landshipping, has been a resident at the home for the past year.

She met her husband, Leslie, while they were both working as farm hands at Pencoed Farm, Lawrenny, and they were married at Martletwy Church in 1931.

Leslie went on to work as a quarry man and a council worker, but sadly died aged just 58 in 1966.

A mother to Joan, Glyn, Pam and Malcolm, she has six grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren – all of whom think the world of her.

Her daughter Joan said: “She is a super mum and has looked after us very well throughout our lives. She was a brilliant mum and always there for us.

Pam added: “When she was 80 she surprised us all and said she was going away for Christmas – she went out to Spain to see some family.”

Apley Lodge owner Joyce Griffiths said: “Ella has a wicked sense of humour, she’s very lively and good fun.”

Joining in the party, Pembroke Dock mayor Cllr Pam George said: “What can I say? - 103 it’s amazing. To reach that age and still have all your faculties, that’s amazing.

“It’s lovely to be a part of such a special day and I wish her good health for the future.”
