THE fundraising efforts for Goodwick’s war memorial have got off to a flying start.

A public appeal was launched by the local branch of the Royal British Legion earlier this year after it was felt the town should have its own tribute.

Currently there are only plaques in St Peter’s Church bearing the names of the 74 servicemen who lost their lives in the first and second World Wars.

£6,000 is needed to erect the monument on Goodwick Square. £1,500 had already been raised ahead of the appeal and that funding pot was recently topped up by an additional £2,800.

Contributions include £1768.98 from the August Festival Committee, £500 from Fishguard and Goodwick Town Council, £200 from Fishguard and Goodwick Lions Club, £135 from Royal British Legion branch president Mr W Holloway, £137.02 from Royal British Legion chairman Mr G Price and £100 from Mr and Mrs Griffin from Ireland.

The Carreggwyn stone has been sourced from Goodwick and is being sculpted by the town’s local stonemason Darren Yeadon. He is currently in the process of shaping and polishing it up.

Donations for the monument can be made by visiting www.justgiving.com/yimby/goodwick

They can also be sent to Yvonne Price, treasurer of The Royal British Legion Fishguard and Goodwick Branch at Min yr Ochr, Maesgwynn Road, Fishguard, SA65 9BE.

It is hoped the monument will be in place in time for Remembrance 2014.
