A WORK of art made by 180 pupils of a school has taken pride of place outside its front door.

The youngsters from Narberth CP School have created a magnificent painted and fused glass quilt on the theme of Food and Farming.

Designed on the theme of ‘food and farming’ and adapted from a traditional Pembrokeshire quilt, the colourful piece was made of glass tiles by the school’s eight to 11-year-olds.

“It was great fun, and we were very creative,” said one of the pupils, 10-year-old Morgan.

The children worked on the month-long project with Linda Norris, who had an artist’s residency with the school.

Linda, from Maenclochog, works in fused, painted and stained glass and has extensive experience of working with children in the community.

“Not many schools have the opportunity to be creative with glass, and what the children have produced is a beautiful, vibrant piece of art,” she said.

“Glass is a very exciting medium to work with, because it is transformative, is in a range of colours and also permanent.

“”It’s wonderful to see the quilt making its mark on the outside of the school building and it’s lovely to think that it will still be there when all its creators have left the school.

“It serves as a testament to the creativity of the children and their ability to work with an artist to bring together their individual ideas and styles to create a stunning artwork for their school.”

The quilt had its official launch at the school on Thursday, and head teacher Edna Davies said: “This has been a wonderful experience for the pupils which they have thoroughly enjoyed.

“They were all very proud when they saw their finished artwork on the school wall.”
